Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Chipoka Mulenga, has commended Zambian manufacturers for their resilience during the climate-induced energy crisis.
Speaking in a speech delivered on his behalf by Crusivia Hichikumba, Permanent Secretary – Industrialisation and Investment at the Ministry of Commerce, at the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) Gala and Awards Ceremony in Lusaka, Mr Mulenga acknowledged the sector’s innovation and determination in the face of challenges.
Mr Mulenga congratulated ZAM for hosting a successful event and for their efforts throughout the year. “It’s time to celebrate companies that have shown resilience and innovation,” he stated.
The minister emphasized the importance of promotional activities in navigating the energy crisis and other obstacles.
“We’re dedicated to providing support and maintaining a favorable business environment,” he said.
Mr Mulenga highlighted the exceptional performance of companies producing high-quality products and services that have gained regional and international recognition.
USAID Southern Africa Regional Director, Mary Gounder, urged Zambian manufacturers to increase exports to the US through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
Gounder emphasized that increasing exports will enable Zambian firms to excel globally.
Zambia Association of Manufacturers President Ashu Sagar expressed gratitude to partners, particularly USAID and First Quantum Minerals. Sagar praised First Quantum Minerals for their $1.6 billion local purchases, with 44% sourced from Zambian-owned companies.
Despite challenges, Sagar remains optimistic about Zambia’s manufacturing future. “Our resilience and innovation will drive us forward,” he said.
