Mental Health Investment Crucial Amidst Economic Hardships

As Zambia grapples with economic hardships, investing in mental health is crucial to help citizens cope with the challenges.
Mental Health Activist Francis Chipalo notes that the current situation has led to a surge in reports of people committing suicide due to financial stress.
Mr. Chipalo emphasizes that mental health is essential for well-being, enabling individuals to cope with life’s stresses, realize their potential, and contribute to their communities.
“However, mental health conditions can arise from adverse circumstances like poverty, violence, disability, and inequality. While effective treatments exist, health systems are under-resourced, and treatment gaps persist. Mental health care often falls short, and people with mental health conditions face stigma, discrimination, and human rights violations,” he said.
To address this, Mr. Chipalo recommends that Zambia:
– Increase mental health services beyond the current inadequate provisions
– Break the stigma surrounding mental health through public awareness campaigns
– Establish community-based mental health centers for care and support
– Encourage family support systems
Mr. Chipalo stresses that the surge in Gender-Based Violence, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse cases highlights the need for urgent action.
“I call upon the government, CSOs, the church, community-based organizations, politicians, and citizens to join me in this campaign. A healthy population means a wealthy and productive nation. Together, we can make a difference,” he said.
