Chingola Mayor Johnson Kangombe is contemplating the construction of an additional market shelter at Chiwempala Market. This consideration follows a voice note circulating on social media, in which the mayor responded to the recent payment made by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) to the Chingola Municipal Council for land rates.
The Chingola Municipal Council has already constructed a shelter in Chiwempala Ward, with the project being 98% complete, funded by locally generated resources. The proposed new shelter would further improve market infrastructure, benefiting local vendors and shoppers.
Yesterday, the Council received a substantial payment of K26,809,553.00 from KCM. This financial boost is expected to enhance the Council’s capacity to undertake additional projects aimed at improving public amenities in Chingola.
The completion of the first shelter has been a significant achievement for the Chingola Municipal Council, demonstrating its commitment to utilizing local funds for community development. The potential construction of another shelter at Chiwempala Market would provide much-needed space and improved facilities for market activities, fostering a more conducive environment for trade.
Mayor Kangombe’s consideration of this new project reflects his dedication to addressing the needs of the Chingola community and ensuring that local infrastructure supports economic growth and development. The infusion of funds from KCM could be a pivotal factor in realizing this new market shelter, contributing to the overall enhancement of Chingola’s public infrastructure.
As the Chingola Municipal Council deliberates on this potential project, the community remains hopeful that these developments will lead to better market conditions and improved livelihoods for vendors and residents alike.
