The Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo emphasized the urgent need for more efficient, sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agri-food systems during his address at the 12th Plenary Session of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP).
The event, which is taking place over three days at the FAO headquarters in Rome, commenced on 3rd June 2024 according to Pamela First Secretary Press at the Zambian Embassy in Rome.
In his speech, Mr Mtolo highlighted the critical importance of soil health, crop selection, and efficient water and fertilizer use in meeting the challenges posed by rapid global changes. “This aligns very well with the Agenda 2030 on agri-food systems transformation and a better life, leaving no one behind,” he stated.
Mr Mtolo pointed out that Zambia, through the SoilFer project, is receiving substantial support from the United States Government and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The SoilFer project, which runs from April 2023 to 2027, aims to tackle issues of low soil fertility and productivity by enhancing soil management practices.
The project includes digital solutions for improved land use, crop suitability, fertilizer recommendations, and sustainable soil management. A soil monitoring system will also be established to adapt to climate, social, and economic factors.
“Soil is an essential resource and part of the natural environment from which most of the food is produced,” Hon. Mtolo stressed.
Addressing the severe drought affecting Zambia and other countries in the region, Hon. Mtolo called on the GSP and FAO to continue collaborating with the Zambian government to develop adaptation strategies and emergency responses to climate change impacts.
The 12th Plenary Session of the GSP is a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue on soil health and sustainable management. It brings together members and partners of the Global Soil Partnership to share experiences, updates, challenges, plans, and innovative ideas related to soil conservation, restoration, and sustainable management.
