The World Food Programme (WFP) has released $3.3 million to Zambia to help alleviate the effects of the ongoing drought. President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his gratitude for the funding during a meeting with WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain at State House.
The President emphasized that the drought poses a significant threat to Zambia’s economic growth, affecting not only food security but also energy security. He noted that declaring the drought a national emergency has set a precedent for other SADC countries to follow.
President Hichilema assured the WFP that the funds will be distributed evenly among the affected districts, ensuring that the intended beneficiaries receive the necessary support. Ms. McCain reiterated the WFP’s commitment to helping over one million Zambians affected by the drought.
She praised Zambia as an important partner and emphasized the need for collaboration to mobilize resources and attract private sector donors. Ms. McCain also urged other stakeholders to raise global awareness and called on the Zambian government to prepare for future climate change effects.
The WFP Executive Director thanked President Hichilema for his strong leadership and good working relationship with the organization. The funding is a welcome relief for Zambia, which is grappling with the devastating effects of the drought.
