2 nabbed in the murder of security guard at B&B hotel

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of a security guard at B and B Hotel which is under construction along Parliament road in Lusaka.

On September 6, 2023 around 23:00 hours, a security guard identified as Charles Phiri aged 23 was murdered while on duty at the construction site.

Police Deputy Spokesperson Danny Mwale said the suspects also robbed a Chinese national who is a site watchman identified as Wang Hong Xing 55 of cash money amounting to K2,000, $150 USD, 700 Yuan and a two cellular phones.

Mr Mwale said the police were alerted and immediately rushed to the scene where it was revealed that the site watchman was in his room when he saw three armed men who demanded for money after tying his legs with a wire.

He said the suspects went away with the money and phones leaving the Chinese man tied.

“He later untied himself and called for help and together with his friends searched for the security guard who was found unconscious on the second floor of the building while his hands and legs were tied with shoe laces and a cloth around his neck.

“Police officers discovered a cartilage and a shortgun near the security guard. He was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival” he said.

Mr Mwale said the Chinese man was able to identify one of the suspects as the former worker at the same Construction site.

Immediately investigations were instituted leading to the arrest of Munji Mauma 29, and the recovery of one Cellular phone which the Chinese man positively identified.

Further Police investigations led to the arrest of one more suspect identified as Benson Chanda, 23 of Chipata compound in Lusaka. The suspect was found with safety boots suspected to have been stolen from the construction site.

One suspect is still at large and the manhunt continues.
