Following a directive for bars in residential areas, bus stations and markets to seize operations, Solwezi Municipal Council commenced an enforcement exercise where Thirty-Eight (38) liquor licenses have so far been revoked.
During the exercise, it was observed that some retail liquor proprietors have been abusing their liquor licenses by allowing patrons to drink alcohol at their premises while playing loud music; an act which is illegal.
The retail liquor premises that were found wanting were warned to finish their stock within a week while their licenses were cancelled.
We therefore wish to caution all residents to be alert by reporting liquor proprietors that are abusing their licenses and the mushrooming of taverns and bars in an effort to protect the innocence of children in Solwezi district who are falling victim to alcohol and drug abuse.
The sell of liquor in undesignated places which include residential areas, markets and bus station is prohibited and the Local Authority shall firmly force the provisions of the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011, the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the laws of Zambia.do
