Workers at Gourock protest over low salaries

BY CINDY LUPIYA
Over 100 Workers at Gourock Zambia limited on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest over alleged low salaries and poor conditions of service.

The workers gathered in front of the company premises in Ndola’s industrial area demanding for management to increase their salaries and other condition of services.

One of the workers, who spoke on condition on anonymity said the labour advisory committee suggested and agreed that the new minimum wages would come into effect on April, 1,2023, however the company could not increase the salaries due to the covid-19 pandemic.

He revealed that management then assured them that their revised minimum wages and working conditions would come into effect on August, 1, 2023 but nothing has been done.

He said the workers currently earn K1, 500 as monthly salary which he insists is not enough considering the high cost of living.

” The money they pay us is not enough, because of the high cost of living, we are tired of fake promises. Today we are not going to work until they honor their pledges, we can’t be working like slaves,” he said as his colleagues cheered.

Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from Gourock management proved futile as they declined to talk to the media.
