Zambia, Angola Discuss Border Demarcation

Zambia and Angola have met to discuss resolving issues regarding the common boundary between the two sister Republics in Shangombo District of Western Province.
Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources Surveyor General, Charles Pole disclosed the development during a joint technical survey meeting of the Zambia-Angola international boundary demarcation meeting held in Shangombo.

Engineer Pole said that the meeting between the two countries was important in order to continue fostering co-existence between Zambia and Angola.

He added that the meeting is in line with resolutions made from the last joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS), meeting held in April 2022 in Chilanga, Zambia.

Eng. Pole revealed that Zambia and Angola share one of the longest boundaries which was demarcated a long time ago.

He said there is need to sensitise the community along the border line on the importance of boundaries as well as reaffirm, replace or maintain destroyed pillars along the common border shared between the two countries.

“Although it was demarcated, most of the pillars are either damaged, destroyed or are placed at large distances apart and cannot easily be seen or identified,” said Eng. Pole.

And the Angolan Deputy Commissioner, Felix Wpongo, who is also the head of the Border Guard Police Operations said that the meeting was an extraordinary opportunity for the joint experts to work with a view to checking the common border, evaluate the current conditions, nature and status of border line residents.

Mr Wpongo said the joint stability along the border is the major reason that people from both countries have developed their livelihoods, engage in trade and have shared families from both countries.

The Angolan delegation leader further added that the Zambia and Angola relations date back to the era of the struggle for independence in both countries.
