Govt committed to address development challenges

The Zambian Government says it is committed to addressing development challenges at national level and building momentum to ensure the realisation of national aspirations and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ministry of Finance and National Planning Acting Permanent Secretary,  Ms. Lois Mulube said this when she delivered Zambia’s General Debate statement at the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The theme of the segment was, “Building Momentum to the SDGs Summit: Transformation for Accelerated Implementation of the SDGs”.

Ms. Mulube said some key interventions to addressing development challenges, include implementation of an economic recovery programme under the framework of the 8th National Development Plan, to restore macroeconomic stability, support fiscal stabilisation and foster higher and more inclusive growth.

And Ms. Mulube said Zambia has made significant progress towards restructuring its debt to the tune of US$6.3 billion, which was expected to underpin its economic recovery.

She however, said the international community must up the battle against poverty and vulnerabilities,  and promote international solidarity  to actively explore and mobilize increased sources for low-cost finance.

She said the SDG proposed Stimulus package of US$500 billion  will allow developing countries to accelerate progress by leveraging innovative approaches.

“It will catalyse transformative actions to bring about the desired socioeconomic development by supporting investments in key sectors,” Ms. Mulube said.

The Acting Permanent Secretary said the SDG Stimulus package will help developing countries build more resilient economies, address unemployment and uplift the livelihoods of people, particularly the most vulnerable.

Ms Mulube said the Zambian Government supports calls for the reform of the International financial architecture. In the financial architecture, financing for SDGs flows where it is most needed.

This is contained in a statement issued by Namatama Njekwa First Secretary for Press and Public Relations Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations.
