4 CONVICTS ESCAPE FROM NAKONDE JAIL

Four convicts and one remandee have escaped from Nakonde Police Station in Muchinga Province after they broke the pad lock for the cells.

Among the escapees are men who were convicted for burglary, abduction, breaking into a building and committing a felony and a remandee who was facing murder charges.

Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer Kaunda Mubanga says the escapees broke the pad lock for the grill door around 01:00-hours this morning.

Mr Mubanga said this in a statement that two officers who were on duty at the time fired warning shots in the air and managed to apprehend one of the suspects identified as Alinani Singoyi as he was trying to climb the wall fence for the female cell.

Mr Mubanga said among those who have escaped are convicts who were sentenced to 7 and 5 years and one who was sentenced to 18 months in jail.

He said Police have launched a man hunt for the escapees.
