ZRA TO INTRODUCE TAX LAW FOR ARTISTS

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has announced plans to introduce a law that will compel artists in the country to be taxed at a certain percentage.

ZRA Commissioner for Direct Taxes, Joseph Nonde says the partnership between ZRA and the art sector will create a tax resume that will build the economy.

Mr. Nonde notes that in line with its 2022- 2023 strategic plan which aims at increasing tax compliance levels, the institution wants to engage and work with artists by taxing them at a small percentage.

He also said that before this is initiated, the company will endeavor to build a strong tax payer relationship based on tax knowledge sharing and engagement workshops to make artists fully aware of the benefits of paying tax.

And speaking at the same event, Minister of Youth, Sports and Arts Elvis Nkandu said the revenue authority should also consider engaging artists in sensitizing the public on tax compliance.

Mr. Nkandu explained that it is important for stakeholders in the country to recognize creative artists as key partners in development.

The Minister said the art sector is becoming an economic force and there is a need to collaborate with ZRA and other government agencies on delivering tax information.

And Ministry of Youth Sports and Arts Permanent Secretary Chama Fumba said the creative industry in Zambia is growing at a fast rate and there is a need for artists to acquire tax information. ZANIS
