Unknown people have stolen an electricity cable and a mini transformer at a Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC) booster station in Mufulira leaving more than 9,000 people without water.
The thieves broke into a MWSC Booster Station in Butondo Township and beat up a security guard who has since been admitted to Ronald Ross Hospital.
MWSC Acting Managing Director Yvonne Chisuku confirmed the theft of the electricity cable valued at K40,000 and a mini transformer valued at K20,000 a situation which has left a population of over 9,000 without water.
“We have experienced an unfortunate incident of theft at one of our installations in Mufulira. This has interrupted our service in Butondo. We are working with our electricity supplier to find a quick solution and restore water supply,” Ms Chisuku.
She said that the latest incident was one in a long line of thefts which had affected the Company and disturbed service delivery.
Ms Chisuku said that the thefts were negatively affecting the Company due to the frequent service interruptions and escalating cost of replacements.
Two weeks ago thieves stole four water valves belonging to MWSC in Chingola and left over 1500 households without water for days.
