Shebby Chilekwa sentenced to 25 years imprisonment

The Mongu High Court has sentenced Former President Edgar Lungu’s Barber man Shebby Chilekwa to 25 years imprisonment with hard labor.

The convicted Chilekwa was found guilty for the murder of Lawrence Banda a UPND supporter.

In his sentence, Judge Charles Zulu said the court considered that the convict was remorseful, a family man and a first offender.

Justice Zulu also called on political parties to educate their supporters that they are not above the law and behaving in violent and barbaric ways that result in ending a life will always be punished.

Particulars of the offence are that Mumbi Phiri and Shebby Chilekwa on October 6, 2019 in Kaoma District whilst and jointly acting together murdered Lawrence Banda.

Chilekwa and Mumbi were formally charged with murder in February of 2023.

The state entered a Nolle in Mumbi Phiri’s case who was co-accused with Chilekwa after Director Public Prosecution senior advocate Kayoka Sifali applied in pursuant to sections 81 and 82 of the criminal procedure code.

Chilekwa said he will appeal the sentence to the court of appeal.
