Two women of Chambeshi have been injured by gunshots after they were hit by stray bullets when a truck driver fired some gunshot to scare away criminals who wanted to steal from his truck.
Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba confirmed the development and said Trust Sakala 56, of Lusaka stopped along the road to pick up his fellow driver, who was going to CCS and immediately, a group of unknown criminals jumped onto the trailer and started pulling the tents.
Mr Mweemba said that criminals usually jump onto trucks to steal goods on transit and said he tried to stop them, but the criminals started throwing stones at him.
“Sakala 56, of Lusaka, driving a Freightliner Truck and Trailer, belonging to AM Transport Company, was going towards CCS from Kitwe-Chingola road and when he stopped to pick his fellow driver, criminals jumped onto the trailer and started pulling the tents.
“It was at this point that the driver got his pistol and fired several shots towards the group to scare them, forcing the group to run away. However, it was discovered that two females who were in one of the makeshift restaurants doing their business of selling food, were caught by stray bullets, and got injured,” he said.
He identified the victims as Treazer Kamwendo 37, a business lady, who sustained a gunshot wound on left knee, and Getrude Chilumba, 27 who sustained a gunshot wound below her left shoulder.
Mr Mweemba said Police rushed to the clinic and found victims being attended to and later referred to Kitwe Teaching Hospital.
“they are both in a stable and medical forms were issued and the suspect has been detained in police custody for unlawful wounding pending further investigations, while the pistol Luger, serial No C6878 with 13 rounds of ammunition has been confiscated,” he said.
