Police on the Copperbelt have settled a dispute of identifying two babies to their biological mothers that were allegedly swapped at Ndola Teaching Hospital through DNA test result which indicate that the babies were indeed swapped.
This was a case were Ndola Central Police Station received a report of suspected Child Swapping which occurred between January 13, 2023 at 10:00 hours and the January 14, 2023 at 13:00 hours at Ndola Teaching Hospital.
Danny Kiprios 35, an alleged father of the newly born infant of Farm Number 2525, Commando Road, Ndola complained that the baby boy his wife Majory Wapamesa Kiprios 25, of the same abode gave birth to was swapped with another newly born baby by unknown persons.
Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba said investigations were instituted and samples were collected from the two mothers and from the two babies and they were sent to police service headquarters Forensic department for DNA analysis.
Mr Mweemba said the DNA results have been received from Lusaka and they are indicating that the babies were indeed swapped.
He said the results were indicating that the bigger baby who weighed 4.4kg truly belonged to Majory wapamesa kaprios(the complainants).
Mr Mweemba said the other smaller baby who weighed 3.5kg belongs to Violet Mulenga, contrary to her claim that her baby was the bigger one.
He said the results were in accordance to the DNA report as analyzed by the Forensic Department.
Mr Mweemba said the police are investigating the matter further to find out the suspect who swapped the bands on the hands of the two infants so as to create confusion.
“The hospital management and the police will be meeting today at 0900hours so as to break the news to the two families who have been admitted to the same hospital from the day the samples were collected from them,” he said.
