3 die in a mine accident in Chongwe

A Mine accident in Chongwe District of Lusaka Province has claimed the lives of three people while two survived with injuries after a rock fell on them underground.

The victim have been identified as Shi a Chinese national 40, Bupe Malambo 21 and Robert Hawele  22 while Frank Tokolwe 26 and John Kasapato 22 survived the incident with injuries.

The accident occurred yesterday January 19, 2023 around 08:20 hours in Kasenga B area of Chongwe District.

The victims are all from Kasenga area in Chongwe District.

Police Deputy Spokesperson Danny Mwale confirmed the development and said the police officers visited the scene and investigations revealed that t 24 miners were working underground the mine.

Mr Malwe said the five victims were working separately at one section where they were extracting copper ore when a rock fell on them.

He said the victims were rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospitals where the three were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The two are admitted to the same Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
