Increased theft cases worries Mulonga water

By Staff Writer
Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC) has in the recent past experienced an increased number of thefts resulting in loss of equipment worth over K400,000.

The thefts which have occurred across the Company operations in Chingola, Chililabombwe and Mufulira have resulted in disturbance in water supply patterns, the latest being in Mufulira.

MWSC Communications Manager Bright Mtonga said the theft of two 20 meters by 10 millimeters core electric cables at Kafue Water Treatment Plant occurred in the last seven day affecting production capacity.

Mr Mtonga said MWSC Managing Director Ndila Hamalambo has expressed regret at the increasing levels of thefts which is not only disturbing water supply patterns but also a cost burden to the Company.

These thefts have been increasing despite our efforts to rump up security on our installation. The major challenge is that metallic equipment being targeted have a ready market with scrap metal dealers. We will engage all stakeholders to ensure Company equipment is safely guarded.

“We are concerned with this negative trend which has come at a time when we are poised to start installations of new equipment through the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project,” he said.

He said it will be very unfortunate if the efforts to improve service delivery are thwarted by criminals.

The thefts which are targeted at mostly metallic equipment and installation have occurred in the last 30 days.
