Chinese man in court for manslaughter

A case in which a Chinese national is facing a charge of manslaughter after he shot a Lumezi resident at a mine in July this year has opened in the Chipata High Court.

Wu Zhigang appeared for plea this morning before Chipata resident judge Mercy Makubalo.

However, the case could not take off because there was no Chinese interpreter.

Defence Lawyer John Phiri told the court that his client is conversant in Chinese and wanted the proceedings to be conducted in Chinese.

Judge Makubalo has since adjourned the matter to October 14th, 2022 to allow the court to look for a Chinese interpreter.

Mr Wu is alleged to have caused the death of Edward Banda of Zumwanda Chiefdom who was among other people he found picking aqua stones at Jin Wan Mine.

The victim was allegedly shot on the left thigh causing him to sustain a fractured leg.
