Free Press Initiative founder Joan Chirwa has urged reporters to be truthful and objective as they write their new stories.
Ms Chirwa said News Day is a day that reflects on the work that professional newsrooms do on a daily basis to keep people informed.
She has challenged the Newsrooms in Zambia today to go an extra mile to show journalism’s value to the people they serve.
“Newsrooms can do this by ensuring that the public’s voices are well incorporated and represented in their news. This is one sure way to rebuilding and gaining trust among the served public, “she said.
Ms Chirwa said that every journalist must know that objectivity, balance and fairness are such a big deal in journalism.
“On World News Day this year, we must make it a deliberate practice to support local journalism at a time when giant tech companies have taken advantage of them by redistributing journalists’ content at a fee,” she said.
The World News Day is a global news industry campaign to
draw attention to the value of journalism and the difference it makes in the lives of individuals, communities and beyond.
It was initiated as an industry campaign in 2018 by David Walmsely, then Chair of the Canadian Journalism Foundation.
It is now an initiative driven by the Canadian Journalism Foundation and the World Editors Forum to raise awareness about the critical role of journalists in our lives.
The day is meant to raise awareness about media and journalism among people, and coincides with the UN International Day for Access to Information, an equally very important day.
