Government says it is optimistic that by the end of June this year, it would have addressed the country’s debt challenges which will give capacity for more investments in infrastructure and other economic sectors.
Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Zambezi District Commissioner Simeon Machayi during a visit to the area, Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati said government is resolved to address the debt country’s situation this year.
Mr Mutati said addressing the debt issues affecting the country will be one of the major achievements of the UPND Alliance led government.
He said the new dawn government has prioritized infrastructure with a view to address economic infrastructure that would help generate revenue which would then support socio-economic delivery for the benefit of the people.
He also said government’s goal remains to see to it that there is decentralization of resources from the central government to communities as evidenced in the timely delivery of Constituency Development Funds across the country, which is a first of its kind.
Mr Mutati challenged the district commissioner to help address bottlenecks that may be slowing down the access to CDF by helping to unblock the stumbling blocks on behalf of the government.
And Zambezi District Commissioner Simeon Machayi has briefed the minister that the district faced challenges with availability of reliable government transport, with his official vehicle used as an ambulance at times.
Mr Machayi said no single government department in the district has reliable transport, including the Zambia Police Service after their vehicle was set ablaze by residents during a riot about 3 years ago, thereby making it difficult to swiftly respond to crime.
