2,045 inmates pardoned

President Hakainde Hichilema has pardoned 2,045 inmates to mark tomorrow’s African Freedom Day celebrations.

Speaking during a press briefing, Acting Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Ambrose Lufuma said the inmates include one thousand nine hundred and 69 ordinary inmates and 33 old aged.

Mr Lufuma, who is Defence Minister, said the head of state also commuted sentences for 607 inmates.

And Mr Lufuma said the current inmate population stands at 25,242.

He said government has started addressing the historical challenges faced by inmates in correctional facilities by procuring mattresses and bunker beds.

Mr Lufuma also urged Ward Development Committees to consider taking part of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to correctional centers to resolve some challenges such as poor diet.
