Former Kabompo boarding secondary school students association has donated 59 single mattresses worth K48, 000 to the school.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Kabompo, association representative, Graham Mafulo said that they came up with the objective of giving back to the former school.
He also said with help from other stakeholders, the association managed recently to replace blown off roofs at the school’s design and technology block by using steel and painted five classroom blocks at the school using donations from the students.
“We want to urge the pupils to safeguard the mattresses, during our time mattresses were unheard of as we slept on bare bunkers, our mandate is to work with the government of the day to supplement government’s efforts in a bid to make the school as a secondary school of choice,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, Kabompo District Commissioner, Hubert Chinyanga said the gesture will drastically change the pupils sleeping conditions in the boarding school.
Mr Chinyanga encouraged the pupils to safeguard the mattresses and guard them jealously.
“I want to applaud the former students association, as a former pupil of the school I would like to urge the current pupils to avoid stealing and reselling the donated mattresses,” he said.
And, School head teacher, Tonnix Kalulu has thanked the former pupils association for the continued support to the school.
Mr Kalulu said the school which has recorded an increased enrollment levels from 500 last year to 700 this year has had challenges of lack of mattresses for the boarders.
“The school has a number of challenges such as insufficient desks and the school hall roof which is almost blown off, among others, we would like to appeal for help by replacing the asbestos roofing with iron sheets as the current asbestos have outlived their lifespan”, he said.
