Ban on pig movement lifted

By MAIMBO MWEEMBA
Government has lifted the ban imposed on the movement of pigs , pork and pork products in the country.

This follows the successful control of African swine fever which broke out on February 18, 2022 in Lusaka.

Livestock Minister Makozo Chikote said that measures have since been put in place to ensure disease prevention and tracing following the lifting of the ban.

Speaking in a statement, Mr Chikote said all pigs, pork or pork products will only be allowed to move after testing negative.

He said pigs, pork or pork products from a farm or facility must have a movement permit from the department of veterinary.

Mr Chikote also said that no pigs will be allowed to move in the night and that all farms which tested positive for swine fever will not restock until they are cleared.

He has since directed that slaughter facilities will only be allowed to conduct business after being disinfected and veterinary check points will continue to operate to ensure compliance.

Mr Chikote also commended farmers and other stakeholders for their cooperation during the control period of the African Swine Fever.
