Local Government Minister Gary Nkombo apologies

By Staff Writer
Minister of Local Government and Housing Gary Nkombo has apologized to the Nation and the family of woman he forced to drink the illegal beer (Kachasu) she was brewing.

The Minister in the company of Lusaka City Council officials did conduct an investigation exercise of illicit brew of beer known as Kachasu in Garden Compound yesterday. The Minister made the woman brewing the Kachasu to drink a cup with her two children.

Mr Nkombo said he has reflected on his action of inducing a brewer of Kachasu and her children who are adults to drink the harmful beer and was disproportionate to the effort of correcting a wrong.

“I take full responsibility for that.  I render my unequivocal apology to her, the children and the nation,” he said.

He said his Ministry will continue on the quest to curb the crime of Kachasu brewing using existing laws while dully respecting the rights of offenders.

The Minister has appealed to members of the public who are aware of this illicit trade not to forget the devastating effects of Kachasu and other drugs on the citizenry, especially the young and vulnerable.
