Reduced Road Traffic accident millstone-RTSA

The Road Transport and safety Agency says the reduction in road traffic deaths during Easter Holiday is a key millstone in improving Zambia’s road safety prospects.

RTSA Head – Public Relations Fredrick Mubanga said RTSA has noted a reduction in the number of road deaths over the Easter Holiday long weekend.

Mr Mubanga said the number of deaths recorded during the Easter Holiday in 2022 decreased to nine compared to 21 in 2021, representing a 57 per cent reduction.

He said the Agency regrets the loss of nine lives during the Easter Holiday and commits to ensure consistence with traffic law enforcement in a bid to mitigate road traffic accidents and fatalities.

Mr Mubanga said the Agency last week put in place an Easter Holiday Road Safety Plan with strategic and integrated spot checks for speed management and screening of drivers for drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol along the major highways.

He said a total of 1,133 traffic offences were recorded with 230 vehicles impounded for speeding violations and 56 motorists charged for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“The RTSA, working with other stakeholders continues to provide structured traffic law enforcement interventions and road safety education with communication and awareness programmes that positively influence all road users to improve their behavior when using the road network,” he said.
