Hanyisi Onion Cooperative in Chipangali says the group is shocked to hear Shoprite Country Manager announce that it has run out of onions when the country has plenty of onions.
Cooperative Chairperson Davy Kapwata said Eastern Province has onions lacking buyers and Shoprite want to find a way to start importing onions from South Africa.
Mr Kapwata said Shoprite should go to Eastern Province and buy onions.
He said most of these South African chain stores always want to create employment in their own country by using the criteria that farmers fail to meet.
“We are appealing to the Government not to fall in this trap for this is one way of creating employment for Zambians. If they feel our Onion are of low quality, let them bring in their people to train our Zambia Farmers on quality,” he said.
