Chipolopolo coach Asanonic welcomes AFCON Draw

By Mercy Chewe
Chipolopolo coach Aljosa Asanonic is wary of Zambia’s opponents in Group H of the 2023 Africa Cup qualifying campaign.

Zambia will face AFCON hosts Ivory Coast, Lesotho and Comoros in Group H.

Asanonic believes Group H is tricky because it has AFCON hosts Ivory Coast plus unpredictable Lesotho and Comoros.

He said Zambia should not underrate any of the three teams.

“You know this is the only group where there are ‘three teams’. We will fight for one place because Ivory Coast is the host and it has already qualified. Ivory Coast is a very good team,” Asanovic told FAZ Media.

“But I am so happy. I am so happy when I see my team, the quality of our players. I am so optimistic about this AFCON but we must be careful especially about the Comoros. In the last AFCON they showed very good performance. The team is very balanced with players mostly from France.  We have enough time to analyse them.”

“We must not think Lesotho is a weak team.  We must be very careful about that and we must be prepared the most. The two games against Lesotho and Comoros will be very dangerous.

My team must be 200 percent ready when playing against Lesotho and Comoros,” Asanonic added.

The Chipolopolo will kick-off the qualifiers away to Ivory Coast on May 30.

Asanovic said Zambia will do everything possible to qualify for the 2023 AFCON.

Zambia is seeking to end three successive AFCON qualification failures.
