COMESA weighs in on Malawi

Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary General Chileshe Kapwepwe has urged Malawi to complete the ratification of the tripartite free trade area agreement.

Ms Kapwepwe says economic operators can utilize the opportunities that the market offers to address public policy challenges of wealth and employment creation.

Ms Kapwepwe said COMESA is aware that the ratification process of the agreement is ongoing and 11 member states have already ratified, with only 3 more left.

She said the tripartite free trade area agreement is one of the most important export destinations for its member states and is a critical enabler for the social-economic transformation of the region and the continent.

She also said that the Malawian Government has made efforts of completing the ratification.

Ms Kapwepwe was speaking when she received credentials from Malawi’s High Commissioner to Zambia Margret Kamoto.

And , Ms Kamoto said she hopes COMESA will continue to support Malawi’s development initiatives such as the Covid 19 response and recovery plan aimed at addressing challenges caused by the pandemic
