Date for Mongu Mayoral by-election set

The Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- has set Thursday April 7, 2022 as the date it will hold the Mongu District Mayoral by-election in Western Province.

The Commission has also set the same date to conduct two Local Government Ward by-elections in Lukutu Ward of Luwingu, Northern Province and Katimba Ward in Southern Province.

ECZ Corporate Affairs Manager Patricia Luhanga said nominations for the said by-elections will conducted on Tuesday, March15, 2022.

Ms Luhanga said aspiring candidates in the by-elections should lodge completed and attested statutory declaration and nomination papers before a Magistrate, Local Court Magistrate, and other relevant authorities on Tuesday, March15th, 2022.

She said aspiring candidates for the Mayoral by-election should take along with them, 15 supporters who must be registered voters.

Ms Luhanga said male aspiring candidates for the Mayoral by-election will be required to pay 15, 000 Kwacha while female aspiring candidates are required to pay 13, 500 Kwacha non-refundable nomination fee.

She said Youth and Persons with Disabilities aspiring candidates are expected to pay 10,000 Kwacha non-refundable nominations fees.

Ms Luhanga said Media personnel and registered Non-Governmental Organizations wishing to monitor the elections are advised to apply for accreditation in the respective districts which will take place from March 12th to 14th 2022.

The by-election in Mongu District has been necessitated following the death of UPND Mayor, Nyambe Matakala. ZNBC
