Information and Media Minister Chushi Kasanda says Government will not impose any unnecessary restrictions on the right to freedom of expression.

Ms Kasanda said Government values freedom of expression as it is an important human right which is essential for society to be democratic.

“Freedom of expression enables the free exchange of ideas, opinions and information on issues of public importance, Government has a duty to protect citizens against hate speech, but will do this within the accepted norms and standards as prescribed by regional and International statutes,” she said.

Ms Kasanda who is also Chief Government spokesperson also said Government supports citizens who speak out peacefully for themselves and for others, and where journalists are reporting objectively on issues concerning the general citizenry.

This was during a stakeholders’ roundtable discussion on Freedom of Expression.

And speaking at the same meeting, Bloggers of Zambia Chief Executive Officer Richard Mulonga said it is important to promote the right to freedom of expression, for people to stay within the limits.
