Sewer pipe vandals angers Chingola Mayor

Chingola Mayor Johnson Kang’ombe has appealed to members of the public to desist from vandalising and stealing Mulonga Water Supply sewer pipes in Nyanji area at the eastern sewerage pump station.

850 meters HD pipes where stolen in the early hours of yesterday by unknown criminals.

Mr Kang’ombe said that vandalism is a major set back to the company as it is striving to provide safe sanitation to the residents.

He said that the Municipal Council will pass a law that will scrap off scrap metal dealing expect Industrial dealings to deter theft.

Mr Kang’ombe also said that the security force in the district will be engaged and full patrols at the eastern sewerage pump station will commence, as this has been going on for long.
“This situation is unacceptable, the vandals are committing crime amongst community members, we expect residents to report such acts to the police, but the police will be conducting full patrols and anyone seen moving idle in awkward hours will be regarded as a vandal,” he said.

Mr Kang’ombe urged the Nyanji residents to be vigilant and safeguard the pipes at all cost.
And Butungwa Ward Councillor Matthews Simukoko said that the vice has been going on for some time and needs to stop.

And a resident of Nyanji area Angela Kangwa said that community members have been affected by the continuous theft of water pipes in the area.

And MWSC Acting Technical Director Westone Chibale said that the 850 of sewer pipe stolen is a health hazard to the community as it will affect underground water pumping.

He said that as a result of vandalism, 200 households in Nsansa ward will not water because the access pipe has been stolen.
