Importation of fish from china will be a thing of the past – Chikote

By IREEN MULENGA
Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Makozo Chikote says his Ministry with the support from Government will ensure that the importation of fish from China and other countries becomes a thing of the past.

Mr Chikote said he is surprised that the country has continued to import fish when Zambia has natural water bodies that can produce enough fish.

Mr Chikote said  the ministry wants to encourage local farmers to start venturing into aquaculture, adding that once the area of providing fingerlings is unlocked, most people will be motivated.

The Fisheries and Livestock Minister also said that he visited Copperbelt to check on challenges the ministry is facing in order to come up with lasting solutions.

“We are one of the Ministers who are lucky to have a president who understands this sector, because this is one of the sector which people did not think can add value to the Economic growth of this country,” he said.

He was speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo yesterday

And Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo has assured Mr Chikote that his Ministry will be supported by the Copperbelt provincial administration.

Mr Matambo said that more information on aquaculture needs to be disseminated hence the need to hold an indaba for most famers to learn will be helpful.
