Progress made in the investigation of late Kabwata MP

Police says they have made progress in the investigations involving the road traffic accident that caused the death of Levy Mkandawire who was Member of Parliament for Kabwata Constituency.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said that the Police in Lusaka has charged and arrested Alick Kalengo 56, of plot number 32 Chalata road, Woodlands Extension for four offences.

Mr Hamoonga said that Mr Kalengo was charged for causing death by dangerous driving, Using a Motor vehicle without road licence (tax) .

Mr Kalengo was also charged for using a Motor vehicle without insurance (compulsory third party).

Mr Hammonga also said that the Police has further charged Mr Kalengo for the offence of Giving false information to a Public officer.

“This was after Jane Mwale the wife to Alick Kalengo handed herself to the Police and after interrogations it was discovered that the husband is the one who was driving the BMW X5 registration number ALM 5955,” he said.

He said Mr Kalengo also confessed that he was the one who was driving the Motor Vehicle at the time of the accident.

Mr Hamoonga said a statement was recorded from a witness which collaborated with Jane Mwale’s Statement.

He said the suspect is detained in Police custody awaiting court proceedings while Jane Mwale has since been released.
