Zambia army officer dies in RTA in Northwestern province

One Zambia Army officer has died while another is nursing injuries in Mwinilunga district hospital after the vehicle they were in plunged into a ditch in the gold rich district.

The incident happened in the early hours of today along the Mwinilunga-Solwezi road near Lolo’s lodge.

North-Western province Deputy Commissioner of police Fred Mulenga said involved was Staff Sergeant Alden Namalongo 34 of Chindwini barrack in Kabwe who whilst driving a Land cruiser registration number AB 2699 at an excessive speed failed to negotiate a curve and plunged into a ditch.

Dr Mulenga disclosed that after plunging into the ditch, the vehicle over-turned and faced the direction it was coming from.

“Due to the impact, the driver sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot while the only male passenger Warrant officer class II, Obedy Siwale of C-company, Chindwini barrack sustained painful left hand,” he said.

Dr Mulenga said the victim has been admitted to Mwinilunga District Hospital while the remains of the deceased have also been deposited at Mwinilunga District Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

He has has since warned motorists to desist from lawlessness on roads and avoid unnecessary over speeding.

“Police in the province will intensify motorised patrols and enforce the traffic regulations in accordance with the existing piece of legislation and anyone found wanting will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.
