Veronica Chungu 54, the wife of Mayor of Mansa, Emmanuel Chungu has died in a road traffic accident.
Ms Chungu died after the vehicle she was in lost control and went off the road due to excessive speed.
Francis Kamalondo 48, who was driving the Toyota Hilux Registration number BAF 3360 lost control due to excess speed thereby going off the road.
Both Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo and Mansa Town Clerk Sombo Kaela have confirmed the death of Ms Chungu to The Independent Observer.
Ms Katongo said Ms Chungu died upon arrival at Mansa General hospital where she was rushed to.
She said four others including the daughter of the Mayor, Cecilia Chungu sustained serious injuries.
Ms Katongo said the accident occurred today September 20, 20 18 at about 13:00 hours at Kashikita village, Chief Chimese of Mansa District on Mwense-Mansa road.
“The accident happened at Mushikita village when Kamalondo which on Mwense-Mansa road, lost control of the Hilux due to excessive speed, hence went off the road and overturned on the left side of the road. The vehicle rested 20 meters off the road in the bush.
“The injured are Davies Kasongo 32, a Council Police Officer of Mansa, Chungu 30, the daughter to the Mayor, Henrick Songeti 41, and Kamalondo who sustained injuries and were all rushed to Mansa General Hospital,” she said.
She said the body of Ms Chungu is in Mansa General Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.
