Ministry of Labour and Social Security says that it is important to respect the fundamental rights of an employee in terms of conditions of work, safety and remuneration.
Ministry of Labour Assistant Labour Commissioner-Employment, Mukamusole Kasanda said that decent work promotes the respect for the physical and mental integrity of the worker and the exercise of his or her employment.
She said that a very important aspect of decent work is knowing and understanding what is contained in a contact so that they don’t fall prey to harassment.
“Employees have fallen into so many harassment issues because they have not understood what is in their contract worse off if the company does not provide contracts which is against what decent work stands for”, she said.
The Commissioner said that as World Day of Decent Work is approaching, it is important that employers must create a friendly working environment for employees to express themselves.
Ms Kasanda has emphasised that employees need to pay particular attention to what is contained in their contracts and if they aren’t sure, to kindly visit any Labour Office for any reference.
She has reiterated that the view that members of public have that the Ministry does not work is completely wrong and the narrative can only be changed if domestic workers can come and report and see how the Ministry can work it out.
