The African Union (AU) says Zambia is a shining example of sustained peace and democracy in Africa.
AU Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat commended Zambians for recently holding peaceful and credible elections and for ushering in the new leadership in an exemplary way.
He also commended the Zambian people for sustaining a democratic path of electing its leaders.
Mr Mahamat said Zambia’s role in the liberation of Southern Africa was embedded in the history of Africa.
He said this was the reason the African Union Commission presented a special award to Zambia’s founding President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda during the 2021 Africa Freedom Day Celebrations.
Mr Mahamat said this when out-going Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, His Excellency, Emmanuel Mwamba paid a courtesy call on him to bid farewell to the African Union.
And Mr Mwamba said President Hakainde Hichilema was grateful to the African Union for having sent the African Union Election Observer Mission to monitor the August 2021 General Election in Zambia.
He said President Hichilema was also grateful that Mr. Mahamat attended his presidential inauguration ceremony held in Lusaka.
He said the President was equally grateful that the AU commission Chairperson attended the funeral of Zambia’s First President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.
