Hundreds of unionized workers at Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, North Western Province are staging a sit-in protest over the introduction of a private pension scheme by the mine.
The workers have vowed not to resume work until they are addressed by senior management at the mine.
And Mine Workers Union of Zambia – MUZ General Secretary George Mumba said the protest started yesterday with workers from the afternoon shift reporting for work but refusing to work.
Mr MUMBA said the protest is regrettable and he has urged the workers to remain calm as union leaders engage with management at the mine.
He said the union is yet to get the full details over what has led to the sit in protest.
Meanwhile, Kansanshi Mine Public Relations Manager Geoffrey Msiska said the mine cannot give an official position on the sit-in protest.
Mr Msiska said management is engaging the workers at the mine and will only give a position in due course.
