Police gives amnesty on illegal firearms

By MAIMBO MWEEMBA

The Zambia Police Service has offered an amnesty on all illegal firearms for a period of one month.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said the amnesty allows members of the public in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them to the Zambia Police Service.

The amnesty began yesterday and is to end on September 21, 2021

Ms Katongo added that the illegal firearms include those without documents and those left by deceased relatives as well as those being kept due to various reasons.

“I want to assure those who will surrender their firearms during the amnesty that they will not be arrested or prosecuted, but to warn that law enforcement agencies will conduct cleanup operations at the end of the amnesty and those who will be found in possession of such weapons will face the law,” she said.

This is according to a statement issued to the media.
