EU calls for violence free campaigns

The European Union (EU) has called for violence free campaigns as politicians continue canvassing for votes, ahead of the August 12 general elections.

EU Election Observation Mission Zambia 2021 long term Observer, Lars Plagman says politicians should also ensure that they adhere to the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s regulations.

Mr Plagman says the EU’s desire is to see peaceful campaigns that will translate into a peaceful election.

“There is the need to ensure a conducive atmosphere in the political arena for people to freely make their choices, my team will follow up and monitor elections to the latter, also disclosing that 32 observers have been deployed to observe the general polls on the Copperbelt,” he said.

He was speaking when his team called on Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe

And Mr Nundwe has said the province is very peaceful and calm, hut he warned that anyone championing tribalism and hate speech in the province will not be tolerated.

Mr Nundwe urged politicians to embrace issue-based campaigns adding that police will always pounce on anybody perpetuating violence.
