Assaulted referee Nyirenda speaks out

By Mercy Chewe
Mufulira based football referee Joseph Nyirenda has been discharged from hospital following his assault by fans during last Sunday’s National Division One match between Kashikishi Warriors and Trident played in Nchelenge, Luapula.

Nyirenda was beaten and left unconscious by Kashikishi fans who disputed the equalising goal scored by Trident to make it 1-1 at Mwaimwena Grounds.

The ref was rushed to St. Paul’s Mission Hospital where he was treated after the incident.

Speaking from his home in Mufulira by phone, Nyirenda said he is fine and stable.

‘At the moment I cannot comment on anything,’ he told Radio Icengelo.

‘I am Okay. I am stable. I was discharged the very day,’ Nyirenda said.

FAZ has already slapped a two year provisional ban on Kashikishi Warriors as it thoroughly investigates the attack on the referee and a Trident player.

The association has also banned Kashikishi officials from football activities.
