Political parties cautioned against holding campaign rallies

Inspector General of police has warned of stern action against any political that will be found holding political rallies following the suspension of rallies by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

Mr Kanganja said that the seeking medical certificate before getting a permit from the police to hold a political rally is no longer valid after the ministry of health was among the key stakeholders consulted by the ECZ.

“Those who will not comply with public order guidelines will be dealt with in accordance with the law, as public rallies have been suspended and all political parties are advised to use alternatives ways to campaign,” he said.

Mr Kanganja said that it has been observed that public rallies are among the super spreaders of the corona virus disease because they attract mass gathering.

Political parties that want to do door to door campaigns are free to do so, however they should ensure that they attach the strict adherence to the Covid-19 guidelines as provided by the ministry of health, so as to reduce on the spread of the virus”,  he said.
