Kitwe City Council concerned on the increasing number illegal political campaign billboards in its Central Business District (CBD).
KCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba said the local authority has since commenced scrutinizing the billboards on the highways and CBD and will be brought down with immediate effect.
“The rules of putting up bill boards are meant to avoid compromising road safety so any individual or a group, including political parties who wish to erect new billboards, must first seek clearance from Road Development Agency (RDA) and the local authority, we shall not entertain illegalities because they are designated places accorded,” she said.
Ms Mwamba said that KCC has the mandate to ensure that placement of posters, billboards and stickers within the district are guided to enhance road safety and avoid defacing the district.
“The council has since appealed to members of the public to seek clarification from its office before erecting bill boards and putting up of posters,” she said.
Following the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s ban on political campaigns ahead of the 12 August polls, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a number of contesting political parties have been utilizing alternative means of campaigning, such as erecting of billboards and the use of social media to woo eligible electorates.
