Shortage of day old chicks hits Lundazi

Poultry Farmers in Lundazi have expressed disappointment with an agro-services company for its failure to supply and satisfy poultry farmers with day old chicks.

The farmers say failure by NWK Agri- Services Company formally Dunavant Cotton Company, is discouraging the growth of the poultry industry in the district.

Thomas Lungu,  of Zgangani Kachinga Youth Training Centre, complained that young upcoming  poultry  farmers in the district are been frustrated and  discouraged  because  the company  has a tendency  of collecting and holding on to  money for thirty days  before supplying day old chicks to customers.

Mr Lungu has since appealed to Community for Markets Conservation [COMACO] in Lundazi to resume the program of selling of day old chicks in the district in order to provide competitive market in poultry industry than only  allowing NWK Agri Services.

He said most youths in Lundazi are engaged in chicken rearing in order to empower themselves economically and reduce poverty in the district.

But when contacted, company Acting Manager Daniel Chihame admitted said his Company experiences some difficulties to meet customers demand.

He said the problem has been caused by two major suppliers of day old chicks namely Rose and Hybrid   who had some difficulties with their hatcheries but assured that   steady supply of day old chicks resume soon/ZANIS.
