Kitwe Council begins upgrading shanty Compounds

By Nchimunya Miyoba
Kitwe City Council(KCC) has embarked on the upgrading of unplanned settlements with the aim of improving service delivery in the district.

Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kango’mbe said the upgrading of unplanned settlements will ensure that services such as road network, schools, health facilities, water and sanitation among other amenities will be provided to people living in these areas.

Speaking after touring some compounds yesterday, Mr Kango’mbe said the Council will soon start an exercise of issuing occupancy licenses as a way giving a sense of ownership and security while addressing land encroachment.

“We have appointed a committee of stakeholders within the city that are responsible of basic services that we need to take to our people. The committee comprises of Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Home Affairs and Nkana Water and Sewerage.

“The upgrading will be done in phases after the Council is done with the process of identifying which compound is easier to upgrade,” he said.

He said the local authority will soon have an action plan by next week for the first five compounds toured so far.
