ZESCO to implement emergency load shedding

By IREEN MULENGA
ZESCO have implemented one to four hours load management to carry out emergency maintenance works on two generating units at Kafue Gorge upper and Kariba North Bank power station.

ZESCO Senior Manager- Corporate Affairs John Kunda said the maintenance will lead to loss of approximately160 mega Watts of generation capacity.

Dr Kunda said the first stage of load management started on Monday May 10, 2021 from 17:00 to 21:00 hours, and will run for 15 days while the second stage will be implemented in June 2021, for another 15days.

“These emergency maintenance works are urgent and can not be postponed, otherwise we risk the safety of our generating units which may lead to severe damage of equipment and compromise the future available generation capacity to meet the system demand,” he said.

He said that ZESCO strictly adhere to a robust and proactive maintenance schedule that ensures longevity of all assets to increase efficiency and reliability of electricity supply.

Dr Kunda said the maintenance of the two generating units is critical to sustainability of generating system so that a stable electricity network is maintained.

He said Zesco has appealed to customer to exercise patience and switch to alternative sources of supply during the period to avoid inconvenience.
