21 people died during holy weekend-Police

Twenty-one (21) people died in various road traffic accidents that happened countrywide during holy weekend.

The country recorded a total of 193 road traffic accidents in which 21 people died.

The accidents show an increase of 51 road accident compared to last year which recorded 142 traffic accidents during the same period.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said Lusaka recorded 67 road traffic accidents with five deaths, Southern had 19 Road Traffic Accidents with three deaths, Eastern had 12 Road Traffic Accidents with two deaths and Muchinga had 10 Road Traffic Accidents with two deaths.

Others where Northern with four Road Traffic Accidents with one death, Western with four Road Traffic accidents with no death recorded, North Western had five Road Traffic Accidents with one death and Luapula had five Road Traffic Accidents with one death.

Ms Katongo also said there was an increase in admission of guilt fines collected by police.

The Police Service collected K674, 803 from 249,887 offenders in 2020 compared to K 924,690.00 which was raised as admission of guilt in 2021.

She said the increase in road traffic accidents and casualties in 2021 Easter Holiday are attributed to non-compliance to road traffic rules and regulations by some motorists and other road users.
