ZEMA orders Bwino Milling, Liang Yun to cease operations

By Ireen Mulenga
The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (“ZEMA”) has ordered Bwino Milling and Liang Yun Copper Processing Limited of Kitwe to cease operations with immediate effect, for operating without approved environmental licenses.

ZEMA Acting Manager Corporate Affairs Friday Phiri said the Investigations undertaken by ZEMA Inspectors established that Bwino Milling and Liang Yun Company had not conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment (“EIA”) as required by the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control.

Mr Phiri said orders were issued after the Agency received complaints of air pollution from concerned members of the public.

“As an Agency, we take this opportunity to thank our stakeholders and members of the public for their vigilance and collaboration in environmental protection.

“We also wish to state that we have intensified compliance monitoring of industry. We would like to encourage all individuals and firms that could be operating without duly approved environmental licences to engage the Agency and ensure that they obtain the requisite environmental clearance in order to avoid punitive sanctions” “he said.
