ZUJ applauds minimum wage plans for Journalist

By CHINOYI CHIPULA

The Zambia Union of Journalist (ZUJ) welcomes plans by Government to introduce a minimum wage for journalists and ICT workers in the country.

ZUJ General Secretary Robbinson Kunda said that the introduction of a minimum wage for the workers in the media industry will go a long way in improving the welfare of Journalists in Zambia.

Mr Kunda said most Journalists in Zambia are barely surviving because of low wages.

He said Journalists have been turned into beggars, therefore comprising their ethics.

Mr Kunda said that poor conditions of service have the potential to compromise the professionalism of most Journalists in the country.

He said that some private media houses pay their journalist as low as K500 as a monthly salary.

Mr Kunda said the union is ready to work with Government to ensure that the policy is implemented successfully.

He said the minimum wage will deter journalists from practicing yellow journalism which has tarnished the image of the profession over the years.
